'The best in super stock and F/X'
So proclaimed an ad for the Southern World Series of Drag Racing, a three-day meet May 7-9, 1965, at three Southeastern tracks -- Paradise in Calhoun, Ga., Brainerd Optimist in Chattanooga, and the Double H. When the cars gathered at the Double H, Ronnie Evans of Ellijay, Ga., was in the crowd, Kodak Brownie in hand, and snapped the photo at the top of this page, and 11 other great shots below.
The World Series photos include Billy Jacobs (already using a parachute on his Dart), 'Mr. Plymouth' Robert Nance, Ed Ward and 'Color Me Gone' (which, for some reason, remained on its trailer for the race), Dick Housey, the 'Bad News' 62 Ford, the 'Strip Teaser' Falcon of Bob Thomas and Howard Neal, and C.J. South.
Also on this page from Evans' Brownie camera are pictures of various match races and super stock meets at Double H Drag Strip from 1964 and 1965 that involved top cars and drivers in the Southeast.
A frequent competitor at the track was the "Strip Teaser" Ford Thunderbolt from nearby Ellijay, Ga., owned by Bob Thomas and driven by Howard Neal. Some of the T-bolt's foes included Steve Bagwell's "Strange Stuff" '63 Z-11 Chevy, Hubert Platt and the Mopars of Bill Tanner, Floyd Bessinger and J.R. Pugh. Also here is another Z-11 Chevy, "The Travler," which looks like it could be Huston Platt's car. Anyone know anything about it?
